Connections + Catalysts

Family at the BeachSummer is almost here and boy do I have a good read for you, if you haven’t already discovered it! Jodi Picoult is my latest discovery.  Lone Wolf is the book. And thank goodness, she has written over twenty more so I’ll have a long satisfying summer of reading. All beautifully articulated from inside the skin of each family member, including the families of wolves, Picoult writes about things that are catalysts in our lives – family and experiencing relationships over time, the push-pull of love-hate, things that compel us forward or keep us stuck, reconnecting and forgiveness. She writes about ways we learn, are impacted, by mothers, fathers, siblings and others and how it hones and shapes us.

How to Become a Catalyst for Change in Your Career + Life

17800967_sExperiencing Change

When you go through a change in your career or life, you naturally experience moments of excitement or anticipation of the new.

On the other hand, you may also experience change as upsetting, disruptive or at times, even scary because it’s the unknown.

Your intellect, brain, mind, spirit may seek and enjoy the creativity of the change; while your physical body may find it stressful, for some flooding or even paralyzing, if you don’t sooth it.

A Catalyst sets things in motion through two actions

Think of your Inner Catalyst like a see-saw or wave motion.

by Dr. Jan Hoistad

In this day and age of shifting economics, entrepreneurial encouragement and longer working horizon, more and more people are opting to work at least part-time from home. Many have started home-based businesses. And many are working with their mate, bringing their mate into their business venture or they are considering starting a small home-based business with one another. Some of these couples are at the young family stage and many are nearing what we used to think of as retirement, but no longer.

For some, the idea of working with their mate seems like creative bliss; others envision a powder keg.

Doing great business is all about making great relationships.

I had the pleasure of making many new professional connections in recent weeks, first at eWomen Twin Cities where the generous and inspiring founder, Sandra Yancey was in town last Wednesday speaking about the importance of connections and raising others up as we each succeed. We shared a conversation and a hug before she beat the snow getting out of town!

Running a successful business from home is a continual work in progress. I know because I work from home at least half time – or more. I do all my paperwork, writing and coaching phone calls from home. When I schedule clients in person, I see them at another office or outside location. That way I keep the public and private separate.

Are you a SOHO? Running a Business from Home or a Wannabe?

Don’t Be Handicapped In Your Career: A Winning Combination for Your Career Success-No Matter What Happens

Businesswoman With Injured ArmErica just received high marks and acknowledgement for her work performance this past year, along with one suggestion for stepping up her performance as a leader. During her recent coaching session we reviewed the feedback and put it into the context of what she’s learning. AND where she wants to grow.

While her review was great, the salary increase was not commensurate with her ratings. There were no perks or bonuses in sight. This was not personal, but across the board in her division within the company.

Having a Setback In Your Career?

Injured businessman in a wheelchair isolatedJust before the snow really started to disappear here in the upper Midwest, we had a few really treacherous, icy days. My dear sister, who is in the middle of a job search, slipped on a patch of ice and fractured her wrist. One titanium plate and 11 screws later she’s on the mend. Luckily it was her non-dominant hand, but nonetheless her job search has been set back a bit. There’s surgery and 2 weeks in a cast. Then a few months of weekly physical therapy and a temporary cast.

Career Planning: Boomers Don’t Retire!

15413309_sSo many people are talking about their life or career after career; their new business idea after business. Work after work life.

Some still call it “retirement” but few are actually retiring!

I personally don’t know anyone who is thinking about just sitting around. Do you?

What I notice is that 20 and 30-something’s are watching this huge generation decide whether or not to continue embracing life while also making room for and embracing the new.

40, 50 and 60- something’s are watching their slightly older friends, especially those 70 and 80 who continue to be very engaged and vital.
